Yatra had to be canceled due to breakdown of police arrangements: Rahul Gandhi

Khanbal (Kashmir), 27 January (Agency)

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said police arrangements during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Jammu and Kashmir had collapsed, following which he canceled today’s yatra on the advice of his security personnel. Talking to reporters here, he also said that this should not happen in this yatra and related programs on Saturday and Sunday. Rahul Gandhi told reporters, “It was a wonderful reception from the people. People had gathered since morning and we were eager to travel. The policemen, who stay near the security cordon during the yatra, are gone or not seen. It is unfortunate that the police arrangements have completely collapsed. He said, ‘My security people got uncomfortable with this and said that I should not travel further. So I had to cancel my trip today. Others took a walk. Rahul Gandhi said, ‘It is the responsibility of the administration to guarantee the role of the police. It is very difficult for me to go against the suggestions of people engaged in my security. The Congress leader said, “I don’t know why this happened. But this should not happen tomorrow and the day after. In response to a question, he said that he would go on a padyatra. Rahul Gandhi said that he would answer the questions of journalists on Sunday. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh termed it as a ‘big security lapse’ and said that India has already lost Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and no government or administration should do politics on such issues. The ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ started on September 7 from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. It will conclude on January 30 in Srinagar.
