‘…will soon overtake Delta’ – Experts said on the rapidly spreading Omicron variant

Omicron has spread to Australia, India, Russia, South Africa and the UK.

Wednesday in Singapore COVID-19 170 new cases of the virus were reported, and experts cautioned that the new form of the corona virus could overtake the Omicron delta form in the coming months. Dr Sebastian Maurer-Stroh, executive director of the government’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research Bioinformatics Institute, said the delta is still the most commonly found pattern in the rest of the continent except Africa, but Omicron is spreading rapidly.

According to the Munich-based ‘Gsaid’, which shares genome-related data on Covid, in the data that has come to them from last month till Tuesday, Omicron has been confirmed in seven to 27 percent of the cases. These figures are in relation to the rest of the continents except Africa.

Vaccines against Omicron still effective, said WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan

Maurer Stroh, a doctor associated with GSAID, was quoted by The Straits Times as saying, “Current figures suggest that Omicron will overtake Delta over time.”

Omicron, a new form of the corona virus, was first detected in South Africa on 11 November. After this it was detected in Botswana and Hong Kong and by last weekend it has spread to more than 110 countries of the world.

Now there are 961 cases of Omicron in India, the highest (263) cases in Delhi

Omicron has spread to Australia, India, Russia, South Africa and the UK. Professor Dale Fisher, senior adviser in the National Hospital University’s Division of Infectious Diseases, said that globally cases are moving from Delta to the newer form Omicron because this form is more contagious.

Fischer said that most experts in this field believe that Omicron will soon overtake Delta in terms of global supremacy.
