Vienna regains its throne as the most pleasant city to live in

The Austrian capital is located by third time at the top of this index made by “Economist Intelligence Unit”investigative unit affiliated with the English weekly The Economist.

It succeeds the New Zealand city Auckland, which lose 33 places due to the lengthening of the sanitary confinements.

The experts rewarded the stability of Vienna, its educational and medical offeras well as the quality of the infrastructures with the maximum mark of 100 over 100. Cultural and environmental factors were considered near ideal.

Europe largely dominates in the top 10 with six cities present, including Copenhagen and Zurich, who complete the podium behind Vienna, and Geneva (sixth place).

Other cities

Canada is well represented with three cities: Calgary (3 shared place), vancouver (5) and toronto (8).

Paris is in 19th place.23 places higher than in 2021.

The Belgian capital Brussels appears in 24th place, behind Montréal (23).

London is in 33rd place and Barcelona finishes in 35th place, eight positions ahead of Madrid (43).

Milan ranked 49th, New York 51st and Beijing 71st.

The criteria

To be included in this panel, the city must be considered a “business destination”namely, an economic and financial center, or be in demand by customers.

Beirut, severely damaged by a port explosion in 2020 and the capital of politically unstable Lebanon, was not included.

Effects of the war in Ukraine

The authors indicate that kyiv had to be excluded from the report in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Moscow (80th) has dropped fifteen places.

“Eastern European cities have dropped in the ranking due to the increase in geopolitical risks” and “the crisis of the cost of the life, included the increase of the prices of the power and the foods”, explained the person in charge of the report in the EIU, Upasana Dutt.

Introduced in the 2021 index new indicators, such as health restrictions, to assess the effects of the pandemic. Average quality of life has picked up in 2022, but remains below pre-Covid level.

Damascus is still the city least kind in the world.
