The heavy rains that have hit northern Brazil since Tuesday have already caused the death of 33 people, of which 28 lost their lives in the last 24 hours.
According to local authorities, most of the victims this Saturday died as a result of a large landslide occurred in the metropolitan region of Recife, the most affected.
The collapse happened in the community of Jardim Monteverde early in the morning, where 19 people died.
Another similar event occurred in the municipality of Camaragibe, in which six others lost their lives at the beginning of this weekend. In addition, two died in Recife and another in Jaboatao dos Guararapes.
They are consequences of a strong storm that has been plaguing the region since Tuesday.
“In the last 24 hours, 28 deaths were registered. In Tuesday’s storm, another five deaths had already occurred,” Civil Defense reported in a statement.
According to the local press, of the remaining five, four were in Olinda, three buried by landslides and one after falling into a canal.
In this sense, they pointed out that the number of victims could continue to grow in the coming hours in different parts of the region, where firefighters continue to carry out rescue tasks, after the landslides and the various floods generated.

The intense rains also left more than 900 people displaced from their homes as a result of the storm’s consequences.
Through social networks, several users shared videos showing part of the catastrophe that occurred five days ago in the north of the country. In these you can see wide avenues flooded in several municipalities, houses collapsing and landslides of hills.

The most critical moment of the storm occurred between Friday night and Saturday morning, when the volume of rain reached 236 millimeters in some parts of the capital of Pernambuco.
Brazilian authorities revealed that this is equivalent to more than 70% of the forecast for the entire month of May in the city.
