Verstappen takes pole position in Australia and Fernando Alonso talks about “massacre” to achieve ’33’

“It will be a fun race,” said Fernando Alonso just after qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix where the Spanish driver from Aston Martin signed fourth place while Carlos Sainz finished fifth best time just behind his compatriot. The Mercedes managed to close the qualifying podium and Sergio Pérez did not go beyond Q1. Of course, nobody could with Max Verstappen:

“It will be a fun race. In Mercedes they always say that they want to leave this car and then they are there to fight for victories. In a very short time they will be there and tomorrow we will have them ahead of us. I think it’s our best qualifying, four tenths behind Verstappen, we had never been so close and we wanted to not take more risks than necessary,” said Fernando after falling behind the Mercedes.

Alonso also wanted to be realistic and when they asked him about the possibility of winning, Fernando spoke of the massacre:

“Well, if there’s a massacre… we’ll take advantage of it. Verstappen’s race pace is still in another category and he has an important advantage on the straights… But there is only one, the other is behind. We must take advantage of any problem that happens to the one in front and we also have the Mercedes, who start in front of us. It’s going to be an interesting race, for sure,” said the Spaniard.
