Dehradun, 11 June

Uttarakhand Public Service Commission chairman Rakesh Kumar has resigned within 18 months of appointment citing personal reasons. Kumar, a retired IAS officer, was appointed for a six-year term in December 2021. His short tenure was full of challenges, with three examinations conducted by the commission being canceled over allegations of paper leaks. Official sources said on Sunday that Kumar had submitted his resignation on June 7 and it has been accepted by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmeet Singh.

Though Rakesh Kumar said he was resigning due to personal reasons, his move triggered speculation in the media whether he was under pressure. It was during his tenure that the commission was entrusted with the additional responsibility of conducting the Group C recruitment exam, which was earlier under the purview of the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC), later embroiled in paper leak cases. For the sake of transparency, the additional responsibility of conducting Group C examinations was entrusted to UKPSC by the state government. However, three examinations conducted by the commission during his tenure had to be canceled following the paper leak.
