US President Joe Biden has named Dr. Aarti Prabhakar, an Indian-American, as the top scientific advisor. After Senate confirmation, Dr. Prabhakar will lead OSTP as the first woman, immigrant, or person of color. Dr. Prabhakar is a brilliant and highly respected engineer and applied physicist. She will lead the Office of Science and Technology Policy to leverage science, technology and innovation to expand possibilities, solve difficult challenges and make the impossible possible.

Describing the decision as historic, the White House said in a statement that Prabhakar is the first female immigrant nominated to serve as the Senate-confirmed director of OSTP. Prabhakar was previously unanimously confirmed by the Senate to head the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and was the first woman to hold the role. He later also served as the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a hub for breakthrough technologies such as stealth aircraft and the Internet.

Dr. Aarti Prabhakar has headed two different federal R&D agencies. Has worked with startups, large companies, universities, government laboratories and non-profits in various sectors. Dr. Aarti Prabhakar worked for the federal government after doing her PhD from the California Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
