United Nations expressed concern over violation of human rights, women’s rights in Afghanistan

United Nations concerned over human rights abuses

United Nations:

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has called on the Taliban to immediately change its policies that impose restrictions on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Afghan women and girls. The top UN body expressed its concern over the unstable situation in the country, especially the ongoing terrorist attacks there.

.

Afghanistan’s Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada earlier this month issued an order for women to cover their entire bodies, including their faces, in the traditional burqa in public places. The Taliban have ordered Afghan female TV presenters and other women to cover their faces while on air.

In a US-chaired press statement on Afghanistan, the 15-member council expressed concern over the increasing abuses of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Afghan women and girls. The UNSC emphasized that these sanctions are contrary to the expectations of the international community and the Taliban’s commitments to the Afghan people.

UNAC member states expressed deep concern over the Taliban’s announcements that all women should cover their faces in public places and during media broadcasts, leave the house only when absolutely necessary, and follow this directive. Violation will result in punishment to his male relative. The UNSC also expressed concern over the Taliban’s decision to dissolve several key national institutions.

Security Council members expressed concern over the unstable situation in Afghanistan, including the political, economic, social and security challenges and their impact on the lives of the Afghan people. It expressed “particularly deep concern over terrorist attacks targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure and religious minority communities in Afghanistan, and the cultivation, production, trade and trafficking of illicit drugs”.
