Tragedy in Durango: Three soldiers die in the collapse of an Air Force helicopter

A Bell 212 helicopter collapsed on the afternoon of this Thursday, October 12, in the municipality of Topia, Durango, an accident that caused the death of at least three military personnel; The rescue and civil protection authorities, as well as the militia, are in the remote place carrying out rescue work on the bodies.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred in the community called El Ventoso and La Cumbre in the municipality of Topia, an area that is extremely wild and nestled in the mountains; This same afternoon she left for the site personnel from military base 10 detachment in Culiacán, Sinaloa, aboard two Black Hawk helicopters.

The helicopter that crashed is a Bell 212 of the Mexican Air Force, and the authorities, hours later, confirmed the death of three military personnel: two pilots and a troop soldier.

What is known about the military helicopter accident in Durango?

The information collected indicates that after the aircraft took off, apparently normally, at one point communication was lost and later upon inspection it was discovered that it had collapsed, presumably after getting tangled in some high tension cables.

Although the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) has not officially issued any information, the local authorities have given details of the incident where they are doing work.

It is worth mentioning that the municipality of Topia is located in the northwest of the state of Durango, at the top of the Sierra Madre Occidental, bordering Tamazula to the northwest, It has difficult access by land and no communication; The way residents and authorities travel is preferably by small plane and helicopter.

This is not the first time that a Bell 212 of the Mexican Air Force suffers an accident, since in August 2015 the crash of one of these aircraft was reported in San Francisco Zacacalco, State of Mexico, leaving five injured.
