‘Today, Sir Kalam will be his…’: Sunil Jakhar takes a jibe at Congress leadership

Meanwhile, former Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar took a dig on Tuesday, just ahead of the Congress Disciplinary Committee meeting to decide on action against him, saying those who still have conscience will be punished. The Congress Disciplinary Committee had on April 11 issued a show cause notice to Jakhar for his alleged anti-party activities and asked him to file a reply within a week.

Jakhar, however, decided not to reply to the committee. Jakhar said in a tweet, “Today, the heads will be theirs, in whom there is still conscience. (Today the heads of conscience will be beheaded). (Apologize to Javed Akhtar sahab).”

Jakhar had criticized former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi and termed him as a burden for the party after the Congress’ defeat to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab. Some party leaders, including Eastern Minister Rajkumar Varka, had accused Jakhar of using objectionable language against Channi and the Scheduled Caste community in an interview to a TV channel and demanded action against him.

Jakhar, however, had rubbished the allegations and said that his statement was distorted and misinterpreted. The Congress leader had also said that he regretted it if anyone was hurt by his statement.

Jakhar had earlier created a flutter when he claimed that 42 Punjab MLAs wanted him to be the chief minister and only two were in support of Channi after Amarinder Singh’s abrupt withdrawal last year. Jakhar was the frontrunner in the race for the chief minister’s post after Amarinder’s withdrawal. However, his chances of becoming the Chief Minister were cut short when party leader Ambika Soni said that the Congress should go with a Sikh face.
