They order the arrest of former Salvadoran President Cristiani for the death of the Spanish Jesuits

The former president has not appeared at the trial against him for the murder in 1989 of Ignacio Ellacuría, the rest of the religious and two Salvadoran employees

Yesterday, a court of peace in El Salvador ordered the arrest of former president Alfredo Cristiani (1989-1994) for the massacre of six Jesuits -Ignacio Ellacuría, Ignacio Martín Baró, Segundo Montes Mozo, Amando López Quintana, Juan Ramón Moreno Pardo and Joaquín López and López-, and two women in 1989 in the context of the civil war that the country experienced between 1980-1992. The judge decreed this measure as a result of the absence of Cristiani in the initial hearing of the process, which began on Thursday. Cristiani’s whereabouts are currently unknown.

There are 13 people identified as the intellectual authorship of the religious massacre, five of them Spanish and outstanding followers of Liberation Theology. This trial takes place after the Salvadoran justice on January 6 endorsed the reopening of the case of the massacre of the Jesuits at the hands of army soldiers in 1989. The civil war resulted in some 75,000 deaths and, according to the UN, more 80% of the crimes were committed by state security forces.

In September 2020, the Spanish National Court sentenced Colonel Inocente Orlando Montano Morales, 78, to 133 years in prison for the death of the Spanish Jesuits.
