Mexican authorities reported this Thursday that they found ten bodies, 9 of them hanging from a bridge of the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, in the northern state of Zacatecas, a region with strong presence of organized crime.

“These are male victims, whose bodies were transferred to the Forensic Medical Service for study, in order to determine the cause of death and obtain more data to aid in their early identification,” the Zacatecas government reported in a statement.

The Public Ministry “continues the collection of test data, in order to establish a line of investigation to clarify the facts,” the statement added.

Cartel war

Zacatecas faces a fight between the powerful Sinaloa cartels and the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), making it one of the states with the highest homicide rate so far this year, with about 37 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The increase in violence is because the area is key in the transit of illegal traffic, especially fentanyl, the most lethal and lucrative drug of the moment.

According to federal government figures, in the first nine months of 2021, more than 25,000 murders were registered in Mexico, a figure 3.4% lower than in the same period of the previous year but which shows that the level of violence remains more or less less at the same levels since the start of the current administration in 2018.

Mexico has registered the two most violent years in its history in the first two years of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,682 homicides in 2019 and 34,557 in 2020.

Last year, this figure meant that there were more than a hundred per day, and it means that every 14 minutes a person loses his life violently.

The attacks were, the eighth most frequent cause of death in the countryIn general terms, according to the report, but among men, it was ranked sixth and among young people from the 15 to 34 age group in the first.

This is “one of the keys to the persistence of homicidal violence. Victims tend to belong to population sectors with little media visibility and limited political weight, “said security expert Alejandro Hope.
