Not always the most advanced phone –top of the range– of a brand is the one that achieves a greater volume of sales. Nor the one with a closer release date. To reflect the preferences of consumers, the consultancy Omdia elaborated, like every year, the list of the 10 best-selling equipment globally in 2021. And there were some surprises.
The big hit was the Samsung Galaxy A12, considered an entry-level range, which reached the first position in this ranking, beating the mighty Apple team that, despite having fewer models than its rivals – it launches one per year with up to four variants – it always remained at the top.
Since it was launched in the market, during the fourth quarter of 2020, the quarterly shipments during 2021 of the Galaxy A12 have exceeded 10 million unitsexcept in the second quarter, when the firm experienced a production shortage due to the new spread of the pandemic in India and Vietnam.

In its inventory, the firm released a total of 51.8 million units in 2021. This is the first Samsung model which exceeded 50 million in one year and ranked first in terms of shipments among more than a thousand models of smartphones, according to Omdia’s 4Q21 market tracker.
As the rivalry with Chinese companies (Xiaomi, Oppo, Huawei, Vivo) intensifies, the possibility of establishing a technical difference is more limited. In this way, Samsung’s strategy was to strengthen its line of intermediate products and, as of 2019, the J series was merged with the A, achieving more attractive equipment.

At the same time, the South Korean firm widened the frontier of its models, adding privilege features such as adopting multiple cameras, longer battery life, fast charging, or an octa-core chip. All representative features of the advanced ranges.
“Although the average selling price of Apple iPhones, which are included in the top 10, is 5 times higher than the Galaxy A12, it is the most efficient model of Samsung, with more than 50 million units per year as a model. unique,” said Jusy Hong, research manager at Omdia.
The Apple team
