  • Keep the wound covered. Bandages help keep the wound clean.
  • Dressing kept changing. Do this daily or whenever the bandage becomes wet or dirty.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of infection. See a doctor if the wound is not healing or you have increasing pain, pus, swelling or fever. Redness on the skin is a sign of infection. On darker skin, the redness may not be obvious, or the streaks of infection may appear purplish-brown or darker than your normal skin.

  • If the injured person hasn’t had a tetanus shot in the past five years and the wound is deep or dirty, your doctor may recommend a booster. The injured person should get a booster shot within 48 hours of the injury.
