A six-month-old baby from Iraq had several holes in his heart, which was operated on in a hospital in Delhi. The child was severely malnourished. Doctors said that this was the first operation of its kind in North India. Doctors said on Thursday that the child was suffering from a rare congenital heart condition that had caused severe damage to his lungs and kidneys. The child was suffering from double outlet right ventricle (DORV), along with ventricular septal defect (VSD) (hole in the heart) and interrupted aortic arch (IAA) (left artery not developing properly).

According to doctors, DORV is a congenital disease in which the two major arteries of the heart, the pulmonary artery and the left artery, are both connected to the right artery. It occurs in about 4-8 children out of every one lakh children. IAA with DORV is a rare occurrence.

The hospital said that doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket used surgery and interventional cardiology procedures to save the child’s life. The hospital claimed that this is the first time an operation has been done through this procedure in North India.

The child was treated by a team of specialist doctors from Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket, led by Dr. Kulbhushan Singh Dagar, Principal Director, Chief Surgeon and Head – Neonatal and Congenital Surgery.

Dr Dagar said, “However, the condition of the child was detected very late due to which the child had fallen very ill.” The operation was carried out under the supervision of a team of radiologist, cardiologist, intensive care and surgery. .

The work of implanting the stent was done by the team of Dr. Neeraj Awasthi, Principal Consultant and Incharge Pediatric Cardiology.
