Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was appointed as the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday. The rulers in the UAE announced that they have appointed Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President. State news agency WAM said the decision was taken at a meeting of the country’s seven sheikhs at the Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, passed away on Friday. The change of power is only the third time the seven sheikhs have elected a new president since becoming an independent nation. Sheikh Khalifa succeeded his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President of the UAE since the emirate’s existence in 1971 until his death on November 2, 2004. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, said on Twitter: “We congratulate him and we and our people pledge allegiance to him.”
