In the midst of the Russian invasion, the Ukrainian government denounced this Friday that the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, was kidnapped by a group of military russiansand his whereabouts are unknown.
“According to preliminary information, an hour ago the occupants kidnapped the mayor of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov,” said the deputy chief of staff of the Ukrainian Presidency, Kirilo Timoshenko, in a statement collected by the Ukrainian national information agency Ukrinform.
Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko specified that Fedorov was kidnapped during a raid carried out by a dozen people in the crisis center where the mayor was.

Melitopol, in the Zaporiya region, in the south of the country, near the Sea of Azov, is under occupation by Russian forces. A video from a security camera was broadcast on social networks showing the moment in which armed men take away a hooded Fedorov.
Fedorov, according to the Ukrainian agency Unian, had refused to collaborate with the Russians, and hhad decided to keep the Ukrainian flag in the City Hall.
“They put a bag over the mayor’s head and took him to an unknown destination,” Gerashchenko said, without giving further details for the moment and awaiting a response from Russia, while the fighting continues.

In his last post on social networks, Fedorov thanks the businessmen for their contribution to the situation in the city: “Thanks to the Melitopol entrepreneurs who find the opportunity to help those who need it most in this difficult time! Volodimir Zelensky, President of Ukraine, had awarded an order of honor to Fedorov just this week. The act was part of the recognition of the regional leaders who had distinguished themselves the most since the Russian invasion.
After the capture of the city by the Russians, Fedorov remained in Melitopol to ensure the operation of all systems.
“This is not my personal award, but that of all the inhabitants of Melitopol who fearlessly take to the streets of the city every day to declare to the invaders that Melitopol was, is and will be Ukrainian,” he said.
