Roland-Garros 2022: Novak Djokovic as boss, American Gauff, Italian Trevisan and Canadian Fernandez will see the quarters

The prospect of a Djokovic-Nadal quarterback is confirmed. Novak Djokovic did not go into detail against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman on Sunday May 29. Rafael Nadal, he faces on the Philippe-Chatrier the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, seeded number 9, who has the distinction of being trained for a year by the uncle of the Majorcan, Toni Nadal. Carlos Alcaraz will be opposed to the Russian Karen Khachanov in the night session. Among the women, the American Cori Gauff clearly beat the Belgian Elise Mertens and joined Martina Trevisan and Leylah Fernandez in the quarter.

Novak Djokovic running

In the third round of Roland-Garros, Novak Djokovic won in three sets against the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, 15th player in the world.

Novak Djokovic did not hang out on the Suzanne-Lenglen court. He won in three sets (6-1, 6-3, 6-3) against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman. It was however a real test for the Serb because the Argentinian, 15th player in the world, has the reputation of being a real poison on clay, capable of chaining marathon matches.

But the visibly nervous Schwartzman only played intermittently. Despite the support of the public, the pocket Argentinian (1.70m) never seemed able to shake up the world number one, sure of his tennis.

“It was a good game, I’m happy. I found my service. (…) I feel good physically and mentally. I’m ready to play Rafa in the quarter.”declared in French Novak Djokovic at the end of the meeting at the microphones of France Télévisions.

If Nadal overcomes the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, he and Djokovic will actually meet in the next for a quarter-final that promises to be explosive. It will be their 59th meeting, a record in the era of modern tennis. Between them, they have won 41 Grand Slam tournaments.

In another one-sided match, the American Cori Gauff clearly beat the Belgian Elise Mertens with a final score (6-4, 6-0). Despite her young age (18), she has already reached the Porte d’Auteuil quarters for the second year in a row.

Martina Trevisan, patience rewarded

After a fierce battle, the Italian Martina Trevisan beat the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-6 (12-10), 7-5.

On the Suzanne-Lenglen court, the Italian Martina Trevisan (59e in the WTA ranking) beat the Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (47e) 7-6 (10), 7-5. The two players went blow for blow from the baseline for two hours.

A good fight, despite the weakness in the service of the two protagonists. More defensive, the Transalpine made fewer errors and was more patient in the exchange. She reached the quarter-finals Porte d’Auteuil for the second time in her career, after the 2020 edition.

Leylah Fernandez on the date

Leylah Fernandez, during her victory against Amanda Anisimova, in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros, Sunday May 29.

On the Philippe-Chatrier, the young Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 19 and 17e world player, beat (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) American Amanda Anisimova (28e) in a match where unforced errors outnumbered winning shots. Anisimova, semi-finalist Porte d’Auteuil in 2019, at 17, was too inconstant to hope to qualify. Leylah Fernandez will have to raise her level of play in the quarter-finals against the Italian Martina Trevisan if the young woman wants to go far on Parisian clay.
