After banning sex outside of marriage and making this mandate public in recent weeks, the World Cup of shame, that is Qatar 2022, adds yet another episode against human rights. You will not be able to have casual sex during the World Cup and you will not be able to wear LGTBI flags either. All this under penalty of jail.
Nasser Al Khater, spokesperson for the Qatar World Cup, has assured that carrying LGTBI flags during the celebration of the 2022 World Cup will be punished with between seven and 11 years in prison. And it is not just a warning but a clear threat: “Whoever wears the flag in the next World Cup will be arrested for 7 or 11 years.”
This is in addition to what was previously said about sexual encounters: “It is a conservative country and public displays of affection are frowned upon regardless of sexual orientation.”
Mansoor Al-Ansarigeneral secretary of the Qatar Football Association, reaffirmed the measures: “If you want to show your point of view on the LGBTQ community, do it in a society where it is accepted.”
Mansoor went further and expanded his argument: “Homosexuality is not allowed, The safety of every fan is of the utmost importance to us, but public displays of affection are frowned upon, it’s not part of our culture and that applies to everyone. Qatar and neighboring countries are much more conservative and we ask fans to respect that. We’re sure they will, and just as we respect different cultures, we hope ours will too.”
