The ruling National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu on Friday filed her nomination papers in the presence of senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi addressed the Returning Officer P.C. Handed over Murmu’s nomination papers to Modi. Senior BJP leaders Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, J.P. Nadda, Chief Ministers of several states and leaders of allies were present. Besides BJP leaders, Vijayasai Reddy of YSR Congress, two ministers of Biju Janata Dal government of Odisha and its leader Sasmit Patra, AIADMK leader O. Panneerselvam and Thambi Durai and Rajiv Ranjan Singh of Janata Dal (United) were also present. Each set for a presidential nomination must consist of 50 proposers and 50 seconders from among the elected representatives. If elected, Murmu will be the first tribal and second woman president of the country.
