PTo get to the RTE Bikes factory, under the hot October sun, we had to cross a dense eucalyptus forest and several villages with churches adorned with magnificent white and blue ceramic tiles, emblematic of the countryside of southern Porto . Suddenly, at the bend of the cobbled street of an industrial area, a huge white building stands in front of us. In the long entrance hall, an old black Rockrider bicycle hanging on the wall sets the tone. Rockrider, Btwin, Elops… In this Portuguese family business formerly specializing in automotive painting, we assemble bicycles for Decathlon, the French giant of sporting goods.
On the production lines, young workers with tattooed arms inflate the inner tubes, some of which burst with a loud noise …
