Around 200 players will be auctioned for the opening phase of the Grand Prix Badminton League (GPBL) here on Sunday. Eight franchises – Bengaluru Lions, Mangalore Sharks, Mandya Bulls, Mysore Panthers, Malnad Falcons, Bandipur Tuskers, KGF Valves and Kodagu Tigers – will play in the GPBL. Each team has star ‘mentors’ which include Kidambi Srikanth, Sai Praneeth, Ashwini Ponnappa, Chirag Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, HS Prannoy, PV Sindhu and Jwala Gutta. Each team will have a maximum of eight players, including one icon player, a minimum of two Tier I and Tier II players, and a minimum of two women players, including an icon player. Players in each team can be given a maximum of Rs 12 lakh while the base price of an icon player will be Rs 2.5 lakh and the ‘salary cap’ will be Rs 3.5 lakh. The total prize money of GPBL will be Rs 60 lakh out of which winner will get Rs 24 and runner up will get Rs 12 lakh.
