Pan Pacific Open Carolina, Naomi Osaka in second round

Naomi Osaka, playing competitive tennis for the first time since the US Open, advanced to the second round of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament on Tuesday with an injury to her rival Australia’s Daria Saville. Unseeded Osaka is the runner-up of this tournament. He won this title in 2019 before the corona virus Pandemic. In Tuesday’s match, when Osaka was leading 1-0 in the opening set, Daria suffered a knee injury. Daria then decided to pull out of the match and Osaka got a walkover. Former world number one and seventh seed Karolina Pliskova entered the second round with a straight-sets win here. Pliskova defeated Isabella Shinnikova 6-2, 6-1 in the first round match. On the other hand, Mexican qualifier Fernanda Contreras Gómez overcame 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 7-6 (7), 6-4. In another match, Zhang Shuai of China defeated Mai Hontama of Japan 6-0, 6-3. Fifth seed Brazil’s Beatriz Hadad Maiya beat Japan’s Yuki Naito 6-4, 6-2.
