Pakistan: Supporter arrested ahead of Imran Khan’s rally, fear of violence explained

Pakistani officials removed Prime Minister Imran Khan Several supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were arrested on Wednesday and blocked roads for foiling a protest rally called by (Ex PM Imran Khan). A day earlier, the government had banned the (PTI) rally to prevent them from “furthering their agenda of the misguided”. Khan had on Saturday called on his supporters to reach Islamabad on May 25 with a peaceful march to put pressure on the government to demand dissolution of the National Assembly and hold elections in the country.

The coalition government had rejected Khan’s demand for early elections in the country and also said that the government would complete its term and elections would be held next year.

On Wednesday, taking action in different cities, the police arrested hundreds of PTI workers and some leaders so that they could not participate in the protest. This demonstration has been named “Azadi March”.

The government has imposed section 144 in many places, so that people can be stopped from gathering in large numbers.

Punjab Home Secretary Syed Ali Murtaza told reporters that a paramilitary ranger was called in to assist the police in maintaining peace in the largest province. More than 4,000 policemen have been called to Islamabad from other districts of Punjab.

Road blockades have been put in place in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Traffic has been stopped on many main roads. Educational institutions have also been closed in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that the government decided to ban the protest rally after receiving reports about the possibility of violence.
