Our goal is ‘debt-free’ for farmers, agriculture should get industry status: Bhupendra Hooda

Udaipur, May 14 (Agency)

The Congress on Saturday reiterated its demand for a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for farmers, saying “debt-free from loan waiver” is its goal. Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also said that if the central government tries to bring back all three agriculture laws through the back door, then it will be strongly opposed. He said that in the meeting of the group on agriculture, about 40 people gave their views and there have been discussions on legal guarantee of MSP, impact of climate change on agriculture, doubling of farmers’ income, crop insurance scheme and many other topics.

Hooda said, “The government had promised to double the income of farmers by 2022. The income did not double, but the debt on the farmers definitely increased. In 2014, the debt on farmers was Rs 9.64 lakh crore, which has now increased to Rs 16.8 lakh crore. According to him, it was suggested in the meeting of the Group on Agriculture that ‘National Farmers Debt Relief Commission’ should be constituted and agriculture should also get the status of industry.

He said, “We will go from loan waiver to debt relief. For this, there should be a legal guarantee of MSP. The MSAP should be under the C2 formula as recommended by the Swaminathan Commission. MSP should be applicable to all agricultural products.” Hooda also said, “Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is not successful. Premium goes higher, compensation is less. It needs to be redone. All crops should be insured.” On the question related to the three agricultural laws that have been repealed, the senior Congress leader said, “If the government tries to bring these laws through the back door, it will not be accepted. It will be strongly opposed.
