Former UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday appealed to members of the Conservative Party to unite behind the country’s newly appointed Prime Minister Liz Truss. Sunak made this appeal shortly after Truss was defeated in a leadership contest to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister.

Soon after announcing his defeat, 42-year-old Sunak took to Twitter to thank all those who voted for him. Indian-origin Sunak tweeted, “Throughout the campaign I said Conservative Party members are one family. It is true that we are now united behind the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, who will lead the country through difficult times.
The election saw a turnout of 82.6 percent in which Sunak got 60,399 votes while Truss got 81,326 votes. A total of 1,72,437 members of the Conservative Party were eligible to vote, while 654 votes were rejected. Truss, 47, will be Britain’s third female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.
Sunak had also said on Sunday that if he lost in the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party, his job would be to support the next government.
Sunak said in an interview with the BBC before the results were announced that he plans to continue as Member of Parliament and continue working for Richmond, Yorkshire, if Truss is defeated in the leadership contest.
