“Obi-Wan Kenobi” Premieres With An Impressive Visual Proposal And Deeper Plot

Of all the “Star Wars” series that have premiered on Disney Plus thus far, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is the one that leans the most and relies on movie nostalgia.

It’s no surprise that Lucas Films has chosen to release the first two episodes of the series simultaneously, given that the pilot feels more like an extended epilogue to “Revenge of the Sith” than the start of a new narrative with the titular character. In fact, for a brief moment, it seems that the series is going to be hijacked by the presence of an iconic character from the original trilogy. This does not happen and by the second episode it is clear what the dramatic engine of the rest of the season is going to be, which points to another explosive clash between Obi-Wan and his once pupil, Darth Vader.

Regardless of whether this happens or is something they save for a second season, The first two episodes of this series fluctuate between moments that delight Star Wars fans and start narratives that may spawn more series in the not-too-distant future. To say that the series records as a corporate exercise is too harsh a judgment, but not everything we see on screen feels like something vital that needs to be told within the “Star Wars” mythology.

This is particularly true of the first episode, whose plot picks up ten years after the events of the third episode of the saga. Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) is still dealing with the traumas of how the Jedi were overthrown after Anakin Skywalke’s tragic betrayal.r.

Of the rest of what happens, the only thing that can be said concretely is that the series is going to fully explore how the Empire has malevolent control of the Galaxy and a momentous event that forces the titular character to have to come out of exile on Tatooine for another adventure, which puts him in the crosshairs of a squad of Sith whose mission is to continue exterminating the Jedi.

Although the visual proposal is even more impressive than what has been done in “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett”, the main resource of the series is still Ewan Mcgregor. Here it is reaffirmed that he is the perfect actor to reach the icon that Alec Guinness created in “A New Hope” when we first met the character.
