No proposal to change Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait on notes: RBI

Mumbai, June 6 (Agency)The Reserve Bank of India on Monday said there is no proposal to replace Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait on banknotes. RBI said in a statement that there have been reports in certain sections of the media that the Reserve Bank of India is considering a proposal to replace the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi with others in the existing currency and banknotes. But, there is no such proposal in the Reserve Bank. Some reports in the past had suggested that the Finance Ministry and the RBI are considering using portraits of prominent Indians, including Rabindranath Tagore and APJ Abdul Kalam, on banknotes of certain denominations.
