Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday wrote a blog dedicated to his mother on the occasion of her 100th birthday. In this blog, he mentioned his mother’s sacrifices and aspects of her life that “sculpted” his (Modi’s) self-confidence, mind and personality. Modi tweeted, “Mother… it’s not just a word, it’s the spirit of life in which love, patience, trust, so much are included. My mother Hiraba is entering the hundredth year of her life today, June 18, her centenary year begins. I am sharing my happiness and good fortune on this special day.” The Prime Minister met his mother in Gujarat to wish her and seek her blessings.

Modi wrote in the blog, “My mother is as ordinary as she is extraordinary. Just like every mother is.” This blog of the Prime Minister is available in many regional languages apart from Hindi and English. Modi said his mother always inspired him to take a strong resolve and focus towards the welfare of the poor, which is the motive behind many welfare schemes of his government. Modi mentioned that this has happened only twice so far, when his mother has accompanied him at a public function. She said that when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose her as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, her mother had said, “I don’t understand your work in the government, but all I want is you. Never take a bribe.” Modi said his mother does not remember her mother’s face or even her lap, as she spent her entire childhood without her. The Prime Minister recalled that his family lived in a tiny house made of mud walls and thatched roof. He told how his mother faced difficulties every day and got a successful victory over them. Modi said that his mother has been a Kabirpanthi from the beginning. She said that her mother has unwavering faith in God, but she stays far away from superstition.
