Manipur ‘sexual assault’ video: CBI takes over probe

New Delhi, July 29 (Language)The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the alleged sexual assault of two women by a mob in Manipur on May 4, the video of which went viral on social media earlier this month. Officials gave this information on Saturday. The video of the incident of two women being paraded naked in the state went viral on July 19. This incident is being severely criticized across the country. Officials said that the matter has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the instructions of the Union Home Ministry. The government had decided to hand over the matter to the CBI, which is already probing six violence-related cases in Manipur. The state police had registered a case of kidnapping, gangrape and murder against unidentified armed men on May 18 at Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. CBI has initiated action as per its procedure in respect of FIR registered by Manipur Police against unknown persons. The federal agency has already deployed its Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a DIG (Deputy Inspector General) rank officer in the northeastern state. Officials said that apart from forensic experts, the CBI will send some more women officers to investigate the case.

The video surfaced a day before the proposed march by the ‘Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum’ (ITLF). An ITLF spokesperson had said, “In the video of this ‘disgusting’ incident that took place in Kangpokpi district on May 4, it can be seen that some men are continuously molesting the defenseless women and they (the women) are threatening their captors.” Are pleading with. Expressing grief over the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud termed it as “shameful” and “unacceptable”.
