Kibet wins Sydney Marathon with new record

SYDNEY, 18 September (AGENCY)

Kenya’s Moses Kibet won the Sydney Marathon with a record time here on Sunday. The first three places in this marathon beat the previous best times in Australia. Kibbett ran the race in two hours, seven minutes and three seconds on a course between Sydney Harbor and the city centre. He was two seconds ahead of his compatriot Kosmos Matolo.

Chalu Deso Gemisa of Ethiopia, who won the Paris Marathon earlier this year, finished third with two hours, seven minutes and eight seconds. The three African sprinters clocked two hours, seven minutes and 50 seconds better than Yuta Shitara of Japan at the Gold Coast in 2019. Ethiopia’s Tigist Girma Getachev won the women’s marathon with a timing of two hours, 25 minutes and 10 seconds. She overtook compatriot Letebran Haile Gebreslasi and Eritrea’s Nazareth Veldu Gebrehivet.
