The Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday registered cases against 500 people, a day after the violence and stone-pelting in Kanpur. 40 people were injured in the incidents of violence. Tight security arrangements have been made in the violence-hit areas of the city and there is an atmosphere of peace. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Anand Prakash Tiwari said that 18 people have been arrested in connection with the incident and some people have been detained for questioning. “The situation is peaceful in the areas and we are monitoring round the clock,” he said. At least 12 suspects have been detained overnight by different police teams, according to sources. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar has warned that those involved in the violence will be booked under the Gangster Act and their properties will be confiscated or demolished.
A senior police officer said on Friday that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokeswoman Nupur Sharma on Friday protested against her allegedly making objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad during a discussion on a TV program recently. Clashes broke out in Parade, Nai Sadak and Yatimkhana areas when members of a community tried to forcibly shut down shops after prayers. At least 40 people, including police personnel, were injured in these clashes, police said on Saturday. Those who allegedly forced the traders to close the shops also clashed with the police personnel. Policemen used force to disperse the crowd.
