Italian Open: Shapalov registers victory

Rome, May 10 (agency)

Denis Shapovalov breached the code in the first round of the Italian Open but managed to beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.

In the second set, he jumped over the net to show the chair umpire the opposing player’s side on a red claycourt, which is considered a conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.

Shapovalov’s serve was ruled out by the umpire, giving Sonego a break point on his double fault. Shapovalov lost that set. He, however, later apologized to the umpire for his conduct. He will now face Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili, who defeated Daniel Evans 7-6, 6-2. Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka defeated Riley Opelka 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Dominic Thiem was defeated by Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-4, 7-6. Now he may face compatriot Janik Siner. In the women’s section, 2020 champion Simona Halep defeated Elije Kornet 6-4, 6-4 while Victoria Azarenka defeated Victoria Golubich 6-3, 6-0.

Coco Gow defeated Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-4. Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine defeated Madison Key 6-4, 6-4.
