This day was celebrated for the first time in 1965 by The International Council of Nurses-ICN. In 1953, Dorothy Sunderland, an official in the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, proposed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower to declare Nurses Day, which he did not accept. However, in 1974, May 12 was chosen to be celebrated as International Nurses Day. This date is also the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, who was born on this day in 1820. She was the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale, on whose birth anniversary this day is celebrated, was also known as the Lady with the Lamp. She began working as a nurse in charge of wounded British and Allied soldiers during the Crimean War. She spent most of her time taking care of wounded soldiers. Florence Nightingale was the first woman to establish formal training for nurses. The first nursing school, known as the Nightingale School of Nursing, was opened in London in 1860. He was also instrumental in setting up a training school for midwives. Florence Nightingale made many efforts during her lifetime to improve the health conditions of all sections of British society.
