International Migrants Day: 68 million people looking for a chance at life

The December 18 of each year and since 2000 the International Migrants Day is commemorated, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The objective is to promote commitments on this issue by different institutions worldwide.

The 2030 Sustainable Development Program contemplates people who move from one side of the planet to another and works to promote access to quality education for migrants and refugees.

According to UN data, there are 68 million displaced people around the world, of which 25 million are refugees, 3 million are applicants for refugee status and 40 million are internally displaced.


What’s more, the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, paved the way for the approval of new agreements in 2018: one of them is the Global Compact to establish safe, orderly and regular migration.

The objectives The agreement is to ensure access to basic services for migrants, the provision of identity documents and the social inclusion of these people, likewise, it aims to reinforce multiculturalism.

Migrants in Mexico

During 2021, thousands of Central American migrants and a wave of people from Haiti arrived in Mexico. Their plan was to be in our country of passage, since their destination was the United States, but the authorities stopped their plans and they were stranded in Chiapas.

After a few days the migrant caravan decided to move on to Mexico City to request the necessary documents and to be able to work.


December 9 tol minus 54 migrants died and 98 were injured in a car accident that occurred in Chiapas de Corzo, reported Luis Manuel García, director of Civil Protection for the state.

The migrants were aboard a double-bottomed trailer. The authorities began to investigate and according to the first indications, it could be a matter of human trafficking.
