Indonesia Open: Sindhu, Praneeth out in first round

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu crashed out of the first round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament after losing in straight games to He Bing Jiao of China here on Tuesday. Seventh seed Sindhu lost 14-21, 18-21 to Bing Xiao in women’s singles. With this win, Bing Xiao’s record against Sindhu has gone up to 10-8. Former world champion Sindhu has won only two titles this season. At the same time, B Sai Praneeth lost 16-21, 19-21 to Hans Kristian Solberg Wittingus of Denmark in men’s singles. Sameer Verma is the lone Indian left in the singles category to advance to the next round by defeating Thomas Raquel of France 21-19, 21-15. He will now face Malaysia’s Li Ji Jia. In women’s singles, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals.

Mixed doubles pair of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto crashed out in just 32 minutes after losing to Hong Kong’s Chang Tak Ching and Ng Wing Yung Hong. Manu Attri and Sumit Reddy also crashed out of the men’s doubles after losing to Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yuko Kobayashi.
