Singapore A 32-year-old Indian laborer died after being crushed between two parts of a crane at a construction site in Officials gave this information on Thursday. Channel ‘News Asia’ quoted a spokesman of the Ministry of Labor as saying, “The Indian employee of Hwa Yang Engineering Company was removing something from a toolbox under the chassis of the mobile crane, when the crane turned. His chest got buried between the two halves of the crane. The spokesman did not name the worker and said he was taken to Khu Tek Puat Hospital, where he died.

The news of the channel said that this is the 27th case of workplace death in Singapore this year. A total of 37 people died at the workplace in the year 2021. In April alone, 10 people died. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said last month that workplace deaths were “not acceptable”. Lee said that between the reopening of the economy and the resumption of more work and social activities, “safety standards and practices have declined” and the number of accidents is increasing. The labor ministry said last week that companies with poor workplace safety will face harsher penalties from June 14.
