The 27-year-old singer Ivan Vitalievich Petunin, known by the stage name ‘Walkie’, posted one last video on Telegram in which he claimed he couldn’t “take the sin of murder in my soul”
The decree of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to mobilize 300,000 reservists to fight on the front against the Ukrainians has caused a stampede in the country. Since the Kremin chief’s speech more than a week ago, almost as many people as Moscow wanted to recruit have fled to neighboring territories. Many of the citizens have made it clear that they do not want to fight, either by breaking their limbs or setting themselves on fire. But this Monday the most extreme measure taken so far has been known: suicide.
A Russian rapper has committed suicide to avoid being drafted. “I am not willing to kill for any ideal,” he declared in the last video of him published on his Telegram account Ivan Vitalievich Petunin, known by the stage name of ‘Walkie’. According to the ‘Daily Mail’ newspaper, his body was found near a high-rise building on Congressnaia Street, in the city of Krasnodar, in southern Russia.

“If you are watching this video, then I am no longer alive. I can’t take the sin of murder into my soul and I don’t want to,” Petunin, who had previously served in the Russian Army and was treated in a psychiatric hospital, said in the farewell video. “I choose to remain in history forever. Like a man who couldn’t stand what was happening. I am not ready to take up arms and kill my own kind », he stressed before taking his own life.
‘Walkie’ has released ten albums since its debut in 2015. The most recent, ‘Walk Out Boy 3’, was released earlier this year. His most popular song on Spotify, where he has more than 239,000 monthly listeners, has more than a million views.
