The Canadian government is set to create an open work-permit stream that will allow up to 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to come and work in Canada. This announcement was made by Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser on Tuesday. In an official release, the Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said that under this program, family members of H-1B visa holders will also be provided study or work permits.

“There are thousands of workers in high-tech sectors employed by companies that have significant operations in both Canada and the US, and people working in the US often hold H-1B specialized business visas… H-1B special occupation visa holders who are in the United States as of July 16, 2023, and immediate family members living with them will be eligible to apply to immigrate to Canada….”

Applicants who get approval will be given open work permit for a period of up to three years under the new decision.
