Gesture to the Church: in the end, Javier Milei will lead the Tedeum for May 25 at the Cathedral of Buenos Aires

After some back and forth, the president Javier Milei decided to participate in Tedeum of May 25 in the cathedral of Buenos Aires -the traditional temple of the ceremony- instead of the cathedral of the city of Córdoba, as was initially planned, because that day he will travel to the capital of Córdoba to lead the signing of the May Pact.

The Casa Rosada had requested the archbishop of Córdoba, Cardinal Ángel Rossi, to carry out the national religious service in the main temple of the capital of Córdoba, but finally The president decided that it would be in the metropolitan cathedral and in the morning and then travel to the capital of the Mediterranean province.

Presumably, he returned to the usual temple to respect traditionsince in 1810 the councilors went to the Buenos Aires cathedral to thank God for the formation of the First Government Board and since then the Tedeum has been regularly held in that church.

Short circuits with Kirchner

Precisely, the fact that the first Tedeum for May 25 was in the metropolitan cathedral motivated the disagreement of the Church with the decision of President Néstor Kirchner to move it to temples in the interior, in disgust at a homily by then Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, today Pope Francis.

In the Tedeum of 2004, Bergoglio warned – among other things – that “copying the hatred and violence of the tyrant and the murderer is the best way to be his heir”, which motivated Kirchner’s anger and never again went to a tedeum officiated by the future pope.

The Tedeum patriot is always an office requested by the government in power and who is in charge of the invitations of those who attend, while the Church is strictly limited to the organization of the liturgy, which in recent years includes an interreligious invocation.

After disqualifying Francisco for years, Milei apologized in the campaign and, finally, he hugged him on the occasion of the visit he made to him as president and wants to preserve that good climate to help him decide to come to Argentina.

Although Francisco granted him more than an hour of audience – an unusual time for an official visit by a president – he later defended both the role of the State and this week the concept of social justice, which Milei disqualifies.
