Famous Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki, who played a mixed martial arts match with world boxing champion Muhammad Ali in 1976, died

TOKYO, Oct 1 (AP)

Antonio Inoki, Japan’s famous professional wrestler, politician and who played mixed martial arts against world boxing champion Muhammad Ali in 1976, died on Saturday. He was 79 years old. Inoki brought a new identity to Japan’s professional wrestling, and it was through his efforts that mixed martial arts matches between top wrestlers and players from sports such as judo, karate and boxing were organized. He was the first wrestler associated with wrestling to enter politics. He promoted peace through sports and visited North Korea more than 30 times as a parliamentarian. Inoki was battling a rare disease called amyloidosis and breathed his last on Saturday, according to the New Japan Pro-Wrestling Company.
