Crisis deepens in Sri Lanka, 45 protesters arrested, curfew lifted

The overnight curfew imposed in several areas of the capital Colombo has been lifted at 5 am on Friday.

Police used teargas and water cannons to disperse protesters who tried to enter the presidential residence in the capital Colombo. In several videos shared on social media, men and women can be heard shouting ‘paagal, pagal, go home’, and they are also demanding that all members of the powerful Rajapaksa family step down. .

On the other hand, the island country, which is facing unprecedented and worst economic crisis since independence, has faced severe shortages of food, essential commodities, fuel and gas for several weeks. In many parts of the troubled country, power goes out for 13-13 hours as fuel import is not possible due to shortage of foreign exchange.
