Corrientes, Jujuy and Mendoza join the City to receive refugees from Ukraine

After the meeting held this Tuesday by Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero and the Secretary of International Relations of the City, Fernando Strafacenow the provinces of Corrientes, Jujuy and Mendoza have made themselves available to the national government to receive refugees from Ukraine.

They did it through a joint letter sent by the governors, together with the Head of Government of Buenos Aires, to Cafiero to make himself available in the Argentine humanitarian aid strategy and reception of refugees.

The text, which bears the signatures of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, Rodolfo Suárez, Gerardo Morales and Gustavo Valdés, assures that an important community of citizens and descendants of that country lives in Argentina, which makes up what is estimated to be the seventh largest diaspora of Ukrainians in the world.

Horacio Rodríguez Larreta participated last Sunday in the march in solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The arrival of the first family

The proposal from the provinces -which was coordinated by Straface- came after the confirmation of the arrival of the first Ukrainian family in the country.

“A first family arrived and after a request from the community, the Buenos Aires Government, through the Undersecretary of Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism of the City, made itself available to provide support and support,” official sources confirmed. The newcomers, however, would have moved to another district.

For this reason and in the future, the signatories emphasize that this situation requires a joint effort not only for empathy with those in situations of vulnerability, but also because of its relevance within our society.

“Argentina has historically had an open-door immigration policy based on the preamble of the National Constitution and a tradition of respect for human rights, and we believe and celebrate that this is no exception. The country has the possibility collaborate on a global humanitarian problem and the signatories consider that this effort should go beyond the political affiliation of the governments”, highlights the letter.

The different jurisdictions have programs in coordination with UNHCR and/or civil society to assist thousands of refugees and applicants of that condition who live in our country.

Assistance ranges from collaborating with food and hygiene items in emergency situations, to opening bank accounts and language classes.
