Chandigarh, June 18
On Saturday, the Congress in Haryana took to the streets in Chandigarh against the ED’s questioning of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Congress MLAs and senior leaders demonstrated under the leadership of State President Chau Udaybhan and Leader of Opposition and former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda. However, the Chandigarh Police stopped them by putting up barricades at a distance from the state Congress headquarters in Sector-9. The Congressmen also had an altercation with the police. The Congress leaders wanted to march on foot to the Haryana Raj Bhavan. They wanted to send a memorandum to the President through the Governor against the alleged misuse of ED and other constitutional institutions and the Agneepath scheme of the Central Government. As the Governor was out of Chandigarh, only his secretary reached among the protesters and took a memorandum from them. After this the Congressmen withdrew their protest.
After this, in a conversation with the media, Hooda and Udaybhan said that Congress leaders are being harassed unnecessarily by the ED. The BJP government at the Center is misusing the constitutional institutions. A false case has been registered against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and former President Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald newspaper case. No action is taken by the ED in this case, yet Rahul Gandhi is being tortured by interrogating him for ten hours.
He said that the BJP has left no chance to destroy democracy and constitutional institutions in the last years. The government wants to suppress the voice of all opposition parties for its autocratic rule. If this is the attitude of the government, it will undermine our constitutional values and the freedom that has been earned through much sacrifice and struggle.
Udaybhan said that the National Herald case in which the top leadership of the Congress is being harassed was founded by leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Purushottam Das Tandon, Acharya Narendra Dev and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai in 1937 to ensure independence. To give a strong voice to the movement. He has demanded in the memorandum that the cases registered against the Congress leaders should be withdrawn immediately. Similarly, Congress has demanded immediate withdrawal of the Agneepath scheme of the Centre.
