Companies controlled by Russian oligarchs pinned by Bercy

L’The vice is tightening around the economic activity of the Russian oligarchs in France. As revealed The Parisian, Bercy is preparing to publish Monday, May 16 a list of companies and real estate structures of Russian oligarchs responsible for housing their property and subject to sanctions. This list is in addition to the vast system put in place by the French authorities to undermine the finances of these billionaires.

As our colleagues explain, 40 names of legal persons who own already frozen real estate are part of this list. Among them, 31 are registered in France, 4 in Luxembourg, 3 in Switzerland and 2 in Monaco. These pinned companies aim, for the most part, to serve as a cover for the oligarchs in the management of their heritage.

While a first inventory of properties and assets frozen by the French authorities was published last month, representing the staggering sum of 24 billion euros, this new list will be revealed in broad daylight thanks to a favorable opinion from the Commission. Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (Cnil), which authorized Bercy to publish the names of these companies controlled by Russian oligarchs and which they use to buy or manage real estate in France.

“The more they are known, the more we will avoid any risk of bypassing the freeze”

“The objective is the same as with the list of addresses of frozen Russian real estate in France, it is a question of shedding light on these structures, because the more they are known, the more we will avoid any risk of circumventing the freeze” , explained Jérôme Fournel, Director General of Public Finances, to the Parisian. “Once these companies are known, it is no longer possible to take advantage of their opacity to carry out an operation, voluntary or not, which can benefit the oligarch who controls it”, he also adds.

Hit hard by the economic sanctions of the West, the Russian oligarchs are accused of putting their fortunes at the service of the Kremlin. In April, the magazine Forbes had removed 34 Russians from its list of billionaires, citing the effect of sanctions.
