Israel responded by calling Petro “anti-Semitic and disgusting” and saying his stance amounted to a reward for Hamas. “The Colombian president has promised to reward Hamas’s murderers and rapists – and today he delivered,” Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Twitter. Katz said, “History will remember that Gustavo Petro decided to stand with humanity’s most despicable monsters, those who burned infants, murdered children, raped women, and kidnapped innocent civilians.”

Bogota later demanded that Israel’s envoy leave the South American country. Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president, has also stressed that “democrats cannot allow Nazism to be re-established in international politics.”
