China defends its move to prevent Abdul Rehman Makki from being designated a global terrorist

China said that its move is in accordance with the relevant procedure and rules.

Beijing:

China on Friday defended its move to block a joint India-US resolution to designate Pakistani terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). China said that its move is in accordance with the relevant procedure and rules. Makki is a close relative of Lashkar-e-Taiba leader and Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed. India and the US had brought a joint resolution under the UN Security Council’s 1267 ISIL and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee to designate Makki as a global terrorist, but Pakistan’s close ally China blocked it at the last minute.

.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said, “I would like to say that China opposes terrorism in all its forms and the actions we take in the 1267 Committee at the UNSC have always followed the relevant procedures and rules.” “China will continue its work with a constructive and responsible attitude,” he said.

However, he declined to comment when specifically requested to elaborate on the procedure and rules. He said, “I have already clearly shared China’s stand. I won’t back down from that. At the same time, government sources in New Delhi said that China’s decision is contrary to its claim of combating terrorism and indicates its “double standards”. Sources said shielding such dreaded terrorists from sanctions would not only undermine China’s credibility, but it would also have to face this “risk” amid the growing menace of terrorism.

He said that Makki has been involved in acts like planning, raising funds, recruiting operatives and radicalizing youth to carry out violence and attacks in India, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. In Beijing, when asked whether China’s move on the corn would lead to differences between India and it (China), Wenbin said, “I have already conveyed China’s stand and as far as China-India relations are concerned,” Wenbin said. The point is, our stand is clear and the same as before. ,

“We hope that India and China can work together and make relations stronger and more stable,” he said. “Earlier also, China has blocked efforts by India and its allies to put Pakistani terrorists on the banned list.
