CBI interrogates Karti Chidambaram for the third consecutive day in the case of ‘bribe in lieu of visa’ to Chinese employees involved in Punjab’s Talwandi Sabo power project

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday questioned MP Karti Chidambaram for the third consecutive day in connection with the alleged bribery for issuing 263 visas to Chinese employees involved in the construction of the Talwandi Sabo power project in 2011. Officials gave this information. Karti reached the CBI headquarters on Saturday morning and his interrogation is likely to continue throughout the day, they said.

According to officials, the CBI has been questioning Karti since Thursday in the 11-year-old case, which the Congress leader has termed as “fake” and the result of “political vendetta”. The case dates back to 2011, when Karti’s father P Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister. The CBI has booked Karti and others against him and his close aide S.K. The FIR was registered on May 14 for allegedly paying a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to Bhaskararaman. The CBI FIR states that project visas were issued to 263 Chinese workers by taking bribe. TSPL was setting up a power plant in Punjab. The FIR alleged that project visas were a special type of visa introduced for the power and steel sector in 2010, for which detailed guidelines were issued during P. Chidambaram’s tenure as Union Home Minister. . However, there was no provision for re-issuance of these. The investigating agency has already arrested Bhaskararaman in this case.
