Catalin Kariko and Drew Weissman received the Nobel Prize in Medicine, their discovery made it easier to make the Covid vaccine.

The announcement of Nobel Prizes has started with the Nobel Prize 2023 in the field of medicine. Today the names of the winners of this honor for the field of Physiology or Medicine (Medicine Nobel 2023) were announced. This year, Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine. He was given this honor for his discoveries related to nucleoside base modifications. This discovery helped in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against Corona virus (Covid-19). It was made by Pfizer, Bio N Tech and Moderna.

Before the Corona Pandemic, this technology was in the experimental phase, but now it has been given to millions of people around the world in the form of a vaccine. This mRNA technology is now being researched for other diseases and even cancer.

Nobel Committee Secretary Thomas Perlman announced the winner at the Korolinska Institute. Announcing this award, the Nobel Prize Committee said, “Both awardees contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.”

According to the BBC report, Dr. Kariko and Weissman met in the early 1990s when they were working together at the University of Pennsylvania in America.

Now the name of the Nobel Prize winner will be announced in the field of Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday and Literature on Thursday. Apart from this, the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the winner of this award in the field of economics will be announced on October 9.

Let us tell you that a cash prize of 11 million Swedish Kroner i.e. approximately Rs 8 crore will be given in the Nobel Prize. This amount will be given to the winners on December 10. This year there are 351 candidates for the Nobel Prize in different fields. Since the Nobel Prize was started in 1901, till 2023, 227 people in the field of medicine have been honored with it.
