Biathlon: Norwegian Marte Olsbu Roeiseland wins the general classification of the World Cup

At 31, this is a first. Before the final race of the season, a mass start (mass start) on Sunday, the Norwegian biathlete Olsbu Roeiseland won for the first time in her career, Saturday March 19 in Oslo, the big crystal globe, which rewards the winner of the general classification of the World Cup, all types of events combined.

Marte Olsbu Roeiseland, who took second place in the pursuit on Saturday, behind her compatriot Tiril Eckhoff, can no longer be caught by her immediate pursuer in the general classification, the Swede Elvira Oeberg.

Fearsome both on skis and behind the rifle, the Norwegian managed an almost perfect season. Besides the big globe, she also won the classifications – and the small globes – of the sprint and the pursuit.

A few weeks ago, at the Winter Olympics, she had been one of the stars of biathlon, with her counterpart Johannes Boe and the Frenchman Quantin Fillon Maillet: the new “cannibal” among the ladies, had left China with three titles and two third places.

Marte Olsbu Roeiseland thus saw its hour of glory relatively late. She showed up later. “She was never a talent in this sport, but she worked so hard to get there,” argued, during the Olympics, Roger Grubben, who knew her when she was 15 and who is now her personal trainer.

She had already “taken the light” in 2020. Especially during the Worlds of Antholz-Anterselva (Italy) where she had won seven medals in seven races, including five gold. That same year she had also almost won the big crystal globe. But a flu had made him miss two stages and the Covid-19 pandemic had planed the end of the season allowing Tiril Eckhoff to win the World Cup. Marte Olsbu Roeiseland having to settle for second place.
